Construction Management is an exciting field that marries engineering principles with hands-on construction. Construction Managers play a critical role in capital projects that are required to continue providing clean, safe water.

This includes assisting every phase of a project, from inception to start-up. Construction Management jobs in the water and wastewater industry provide the opportunity to perform engineering work and to be a part of the execution process for construction.

Common responsibilities for Construction Managers include biddability and constructability review for projects going out to public bid, managing project teams and contract administration including budgeting, scheduling, quality assurance, documentation and facilitating operational coordination and start-up of new facilities.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of: engineering principles, public contract code and bid procedures, local and federal safety regulations, various construction methods, water and wastewater treatment design basics

Skills in: project management, organization, and coordination

Ability to: work with various stakeholders to resolve construction issues, communicate with groups of people with varying understanding of construction/engineering, manage project team, make decisions in a short time frame, read and interpret drawings and specifications, understand a schedule, create estimates

Education and Experience

A bachelor’s degree in engineering is generally the minimum education requirement.  Many employers require a Professional Engineering (PE) license in order to advance within their organization. Entry-level project engineering positions are available to college graduates.

Experience in construction project management is preferable.

Salary Ranges

The salary will vary dependent on qualifications, experience, position obtained, location and from agency to agency. Salary is dependent on prevailing wage and certifications.

Construction Manager: $95,000 - $117,000
(less than 10 years’ experience)

Sr. Construction Manager: $117,000 - $187,000
(10+ years’ experience)
